Sunbathing & Earthing: A Vitalist Perspective

Article by Natural Physician student, Belén Mendoza.

In our search for holistic well-being, few things remain as enduringly powerful as our connection to nature. Sunbathing and earthing (or grounding) are two ancient practices that Vitalism identifies as crucial for maintaining health and vitality. Vitalism is a philosophical and medical doctrine originating in the 18th century, that postulates that life is driven by an inherent force that transcends physical and chemical processes and sees health as a flow of “life force”. According to vitalists, this “life force” is what distinguishes living organisms from inanimate matter and is essential for maintaining health and vitality. In the context of this philosophy, natural therapies such as sunbathing and earthing are among other key practices for enhancing the flow of this life force and supporting holistic health. Let’s delve into how these practices can enrich physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

SUNBATHING: HARNESSING SOLAR VITALITY

From the Vitalist perspective, the sun is a vital source of energy. Sunlight doesn’t just illuminate our days; it revitalizes our bodies and minds by providing warmth, energy, and essential nutrients. Sunbathing, then, is much more than simply enjoying warmth—it’s a way to absorb life-giving energy directly from the sun. This concept finds support in our modern understanding of vitamin D, synthesized when our skin meets sunlight. Vitamin D is a powerhouse nutrient for bone health, immune function, and even mood regulation.

Beyond physical benefits, sunlight has been shown to help regulate circadian rhythms, the body’s internal clock. Sun exposure signals our bodies to produce melatonin in the evening, promoting restful sleep and aligning us with nature’s day-night cycle. Vitalists believe this harmony with natural rhythms not only bolsters health but also purifies and clears energy pathways within the body.

Research also highlights how sunlight boosts serotonin, known as the “happiness hormone,” which explains the strong connection between sunny days and improved mood. Studies reveal that mindful sunbathing can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety while stimulating creativity and emotional equilibrium. Just a few minutes of safe, intentional sun exposure each day can yield profound benefits, reminding us to embrace the rhythms of the natural world for vital health.

EARTHING: RECONNECTING WITH EARTH’S VITAL FORCE

Earthing, or grounding, involves direct contact with the Earth—such as walking barefoot on grass or sand. The Earth is seen as a reservoir of life energy, and reconnecting to it can replenish our own internal energy stores, calming the mind and restoring bodily balance. Vitalists argue that many modern ailments stem from a disconnection with nature, and that simple, daily grounding restores this essential bond, supporting physical and mental well-being.

From a scientific perspective, earthing allows the body to absorb electrons from the Earth, which may neutralize free radicals that contribute to inflammation. Studies have shown grounding reduces markers of inflammation and pain and improves sleep and cortisol levels, supporting a balanced immune response and promoting recovery.

Modern research also suggests that grounding can improve cardiovascular health by reducing blood viscosity, enhancing circulation, and lowering blood pressure. When grounded, the body enters a state of physiological calm, easing stress, promoting relaxation, and fostering emotional resilience. Vitalists view this as a natural way to harmonize with the Earth’s energy, creating a sense of unity with nature that benefits overall wellness.

Embracing Natural Therapies for Holistic Health

Vitalist philosophy holds that sunbathing and earthing bring us closer to the life force that animates all living things. In today’s fast-paced world, where artificial environments dominate, these practices offer a grounding, nature-centered approach to health. Together, they represent a simple yet powerful way to achieve harmony with nature, ensuring that body, mind, and spirit remain in balance. By embracing sunbathing and earthing, we can tap into timeless wisdom to enhance vitality, resilience, and emotional well-being.
